Myoshin-ji Temple

It is said that beginning of this temple was Hanazono Houou (the Houou means Retired Emperor become a priest) assigned Egen Kaizan as the founding patron and changed the name of Detached Palace Hagiwara-Den to Myoshin-ji. At the beginning of Muromachi Period, this temple was closed once and burned down due to the Ounin War after the renaissance, but later on reconstructed by Soushin Settuko. This temple has many famous priests graduates. The temple established many sub-temples and extended power even in countryside. Currently it has 3500 sub-temples and it is the biggest Sect among Rinzai Sect.
You may see the Three Gates, Lecture Hall, Bed Room and Daihoujyo (“Living Hall”) in the northern area of Chokushi-mon (“Main Gate”), Bath Room, Bell Tower and Literary in the eastern area. Two gardens of Houjyo are neat, clean and very popular.
The bell placed in the temple is called “Bell of Oushikicho”. It was created in 698 and it is the oldest Zaimei Bell in Japan. It is superior in terms of the shape and tone color. The temple has more than 40 sub-temples and is amazed as HQ of Zen Sect.

Myoshin-ji has so many sub-temples. Especially these temples show a beautiful shape of roof. The connected roof looks like singing tercet lyrically Exactly, The roofs with tiles is art.
