History
The Heian Shrine was founded to celebrate the 1100th year anniversary of Heian capital relocation by Emperor Kanmu, it also was built to enshrine the emperor himself as deities. In the later days Emperor Koumei, the last emperor in the Heiankyo Period was enshrined too. The shrine pavilion was renovated with the style of Chodo-in where the central government was in the Heian-kyo, after diminished in a half size. At the bi-level main gate, the front shrine with Iriomoya-Tsukuri style located at the central of Outemon is called Taikyoku-den, and at the right and left to pavilions, there is Souryu-rou at the east and Byatuko-rou at the west
On Octorber 22 every year, one of the three main festivals in Kyoto-city is held in the Heian Shrine.

High Spot
In the broad shrine garden, lots of Yaebenishidare Sakura blossom out. Especially, the views in the southern garden and eastern garden are wonderful. At the eastern garden the view of the reflection of Shobi-kan (VIP House) on the pond is superb. You can also enjoy 20 different kinds and 3000 pieces of various cherry-blossom trees at the Sakura garden. As it is a circuit style garden, it takes about 30 minuets of walk time at slow pace to look around all the garden.
