The longest wooden architectural structure in the world

In 1164 (the second year of Chokan era), Shogun, Kiyomori Taira constructed this structure for the retired Emperor of cloistered government, Goshirakawa, at the foot of Toribe mountain. Even though this structure was burned down 80 years later, it was reconstructed in 1266 (the third year of Bunei era). Since then it has been preserved for 700 years with rebuilding 4 times (Muromachi Period, Momoyama Period, Edo Period and Showa Period). This long chapel is made of all-cypress with the Iriomoya style and clay title roofing. The length of chapel is 120m. It is called SanjyuSan (“thirty three”) gen Do because of the distance between the poles are 33ma (ma: old Japanese unit for length), and 1001 wooden figures are enshrined in the main hall. Even it is likely be to missed, the southern gate and Tukiji fence, also known as Taikou fence (this Taikou stands for Hideyoshi Toyotomi). The fence has the Jyomon structure representing a general atmosphere of Momoyama Period

Jyomon / thousand figures and thousand hand Kannon Zou

The thousand Kannon Zou lining up in ten rows is a sight to see. It is said that there is one figure which has the face that you want to meet among these wooden figures.
