Toufuku-ji Temple

History

This temple is the origin was when Kanpaku (High ranked officer who managed the government on behalf of young Emperor), Michiie Kujyo established a temple for his grandfather Kanemitsu Kujyo. The temple name, Tofuku-ji, is taken one word each from the Kofuku-ji and Toudai-ji of Nara. Inside the temple grounds there are lots of national properties such as three gate, lecture hall, residents for priests and so on.

High Spot

The temples red leaves in the very famous but in the past it used be a great spot for Sakura (Cherry blossoms). It is said that Sakura trees in the temple was too attractive and disturbing for the training priests, so they cut it down the trees.
The area which has the bridge “Tsuutenkyo” between the main hall and hall for Buddha statue, is a canyon called “Sengyokukan” is now know for a great spot for red leaves.
Tsuutekyo is also popular because of it often used for location for historic drama shows and TV commercials.
There are “Honbo Gardens” created by Sanrei Morishige which was his early produciton, and four gardens are placed at the four corner of Hoijyo with the names of Northern Garden, Southern Garden, Western Garden and Eastern Garden. These style of garden is exclusive only for Toufuku-ji.
