  • 名水の名所

The Fujinomori shrine was established about 1800 years ago by the Empress Jingu and had close connection with the Imperial Family. The Main shrine was given by the Emperor Nakamikado.

Entering from Minamimon and going straight, you will find guardian dogs right and left. A building near the dogs are Haiden. There is Honden a few meters ahead, and if you look at right side, you will find the seven delties of good future , Hatatsuka and Fujinomizu. It sprang out from The East of Honden. It dries up twice, and this third water of God spring out from underground 90m. The water tastes good. In summer this water is enough cold that the bottles defog. At left side the statue of Kintaro, A venetration monument of Prince Toneri, and at the back of Honden, there are nanakyusha, and etc,

The center of the main shrine
It dedicated seven Gods,Susanoonomikoto, Wakeizumikazuranomikoto, Yamatotakerunomikoto, the Emperor Oujin, the Emperor Nintoku and the Empress Jingu, Takenouchisukune. The origin is the Empress Jingu to be dedicated at Fujinomori after returning in a triumph from Shiragi in 203.

The East of the main shrine
It dedicated two Gods,Tonerishinnou and The Emperor Tenmu. In 759, Fujio was dedicated in the Fujio, Fukakusa. Fujio is now Fushimi Inari. the In 1438, the Emperor Gohanazono ordered Yoshimasa Ashikaga shogun to move a small shrine at the top of the Inari shrine to Fujio. The God Fujio transfered to Fujinomori, and dedicated the East of the main shrine. The Kaheinogi was held at the East shrine.

The west of the main shrine
It dedicated three Gods, Sagarashinnou, Iyoshinnnou, Nouenaishinnnou,
After Sagawashnnou became the Crown Prince, a rebellion occurred. He will suppress the riot in Ezo as a conquest Shogun. Before he went,he visited this shrine prayed for wining the rebellion and were going there the rebellion feared of it,and stop the rebellion without fighting.

The Fujinomori Festival

The Fujinomori Festival is the most famous annual event in the Fujinomori shrine. In the shrine a lot of road side stands are open from May 1 to May 5 and a lot of people visit the shrine and enjoy them.

The Shinto ritual of Kakeuma is very famous ritual of Fujinomori festival on May 5. The root of this festival is 1200 years ago. In 781, a revellion occurred in Mutsu and the group to go to Mutsu was suppressed as a conquest shogun and prayed at this shrine. This Shinto ritual is imitated for this occurrence.

Now this Shinto ritual of Kakeuma has seven techniques, for example, Yokonori(a rider on running horse hides himself from the Enemy), Fujisagari (a rider on running horse acts like shot by the Enemy and injured), Ichijigaki (a rider on a running horse writes calligraphy for conveying at the back side of riders..
This ritual is very dangerous and riders are sometimes fallen from the horse. The horse run from Minamimon to in front of Haiden at full speed. Distance between Hourses and spectators are possibly 3 meters,so you will feel very powerful.

This Shinto ritual of Kakeuma was designated “intangible folk customs assets in 1973 from Kyoto city. The Shinto ritual of Kakeuma is dedicated the shrine, so it is believed as the God of horses. When events are held, people who were related to horse racing visit them.

This shrine has two gardens for hydrogen. In June 3500 flowers blume in 5000 squares. A lot of people come to see them during this period.

Tonerishinnou that edited Nihonshoki and first scholar in Japan is dedicated, so it is believed as the God of Study.

The Fujinomori shrine is not famous compared with other shrine, but it has big history and interesting Shinto ritual of Kakeuma on May 5, and in June you will enjoy 3500 hydrogen flowers. I strongly recomends to visit this shrine.
